Mama J’s Homemade Donuts

“Your dad and I went pretty early in the morning to help Grandma and Grandpa Bacon cut up a deer. Grandma B made donuts for us and they were so good. Your dad then encouraged me to try to make some. So this is how this recipe came about. They were a nice treat on a cold winter day!” – Mama J

Mama J’s Homemade Donuts

  • 1 1/2 cups warm water
  • 2 tbsp yeast
  • 2/3 cup canned milk
  • 1/4 cup sugar
  • 1/4 cup vegetable oil
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1 egg
  • 5-6 cups flour
  • vegetable oil (for frying)
  • cinnamon
  • sugar
  • powdered sugar
  1. Combine warm water, and yeast in a big mixer bowl.

  2. Warm canned milk, sugar, vegetable oil, salt in microwave until lukewarm.

  3. Pour the warm mixture into the mixer bowl with the water and yeast. Attach kneading hook to the mixer.

  4. Begin mixing and add 1 egg and 2-3 cups of flour.

  5. Gradually add 2-3 cups more flour until the flour forms a ball around the hook and does not stick to the side of the bowl. Continue to allow the mixer to knead the dough for about 10 mins at #2 on a kitchenaid mixer.

  6. Drop dough into lightly greased bowl and let raise until double about 1 to 1.5 hours.

  7. Roll out dough to about 1/2 inch thick. Cut donut shaped with cutters.

  8. Let donuts raise 1/2 hour to 45 minutes while you heat the vegetable oil.

  9. In heavy sauce pan, heat vegetable oil until the oil is about 375 degrees.

Drop in donuts and fry to golden brown, about 1 to 1.5 minutes per side.

    Drain on paper towels.

Roll in cinnamon sugar and/or powdered sugar.

Eat lots while they are warm 🙂
